How to generate envelope barcodes

How to generate envelope barcodes

Adding a USPS barcode to your envelope helps improve mail processing speed and accuracy. The USPS provides a free online Encoder/Decoder tool that allows you to generate the correct barcode for your mailing.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • The full delivery address (including ZIP Code™ or ZIP+4® if available)
  • Internet access to the USPS Encoder tool

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Open the USPS Encoder Tool

Go to the USPS Encoder/Decoder page:
https://postalpro.usps.com/ppro-tools/encoder-decoder

2. Select “Encode”

On the page, choose the “Encode” option. This allows you to generate a barcode from an address.

3. Enter the Address

Fill in the required fields:

  • Street address
  • City
  • State
  • ZIP Code (ZIP+4 preferred for best accuracy)

4. Generate the Barcode

Click the “Encode” button.
The tool will produce:

  • A standardized address
  • The corresponding USPS barcode (typically an Intelligent Mail® barcode)

5. Copy or Download the Barcode

  • Copy the barcode image or data provided
  • Save it for use in your design or printing software

Placing the Barcode on Your Envelope

For best results:

  • Place the barcode in the lower right area of the envelope
  • Ensure there is enough clear space (quiet zone) around the barcode
  • Use high-contrast printing (black barcode on a light background)

Tips for Accuracy

  • Always use the full ZIP+4 code when possible
  • Avoid altering the barcode once generated
  • Verify the address formatting provided by USPS

Common Uses

  • Business mailings
  • Invoices and statements
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Bulk mail preparation
