When a barcode is requested on a return envelope, USPS requirements may include the use of an Intelligent Mail® barcode (IMb) and, in some cases, a Mailer ID (MID). The barcode used on the envelope is based on the return address, ZIP+4 information, and the type of envelope ordered.
In some situations, the post office or mail service provider may generate a sample barcode or provide a PDF proof showing how the envelope should appear. Our system generates barcodes internally to ensure compatibility, security, and print accuracy. Because of this, the barcode printed on your envelopes may not look exactly the same as the sample provided by USPS or another vendor.
However, we guarantee that all system-generated barcodes produced by us are fully compatible with United States Postal Service (USPS) mailing standards.
Using an exact USPS-provided barcode
If you require the exact barcode shown on a USPS proof or supplied artwork, we can produce the envelopes using your custom design files.
In this case:
-
the barcode must already be included in the artwork provided to us
-
the envelope order must be placed as a custom design order
-
the barcode printed on the envelopes will match your supplied artwork exactly
Please note that we cannot combine a customer-supplied barcode with our system-generated barcode process.
Which option should I choose?
Both options are USPS-compatible and fully functional:
-
System-generated barcode
Recommended for pre-set orders and streamlined processing.
-
Customer-supplied barcode/artwork
Recommended when an exact barcode appearance or USPS-issued proof match is required.
The best option depends on your preference, mailing requirements, and budget.
Intelligent Mail® Barcode (IMb)
The Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) is the barcode system used by USPS to sort and track mail pieces. It combines routing and tracking information into a single barcode format and replaces older USPS barcode technologies. It helps sort and track letters and flat mail. Businesses using automation mail services or Business Reply Mail may require a Mailer ID (MID) in order to print an IMB barcode on return envelopes.
The IMB uses four different bar types to encode information while using less space on the envelope.
How do I get started?
Register for a USPS Business Customer account
- Request a Mailer ID (MID) through the USPS Business Gateway or PostalPro website.
Contact your local post office or Business Mail Entry Unit (BMEU) to determine:
- which permit type is appropriate for your mailing needs
- applicable setup, annual, or postage fees
- whether a Business Reply Mail permit is required
Order your envelopes and provide your printer or mail service provider with:
- your Mailer ID (MID)
- your permit information (if applicable)
- the correct ZIP+4 or delivery address information
What is a Mailer ID?
A Mailer ID (MID) is a unique 6- or 9-digit number assigned by USPS to identify a business or organization using Intelligent Mail services.
- 6-digit MIDs are generally assigned to high-volume mailers
- 9-digit MIDs are commonly assigned to lower-volume mailers
